Fire Alarm Systems (32 hour course)
This course is recommended for Certified Technicians and Journeymen. It is also appropriate for Trainees who have taken GET WIRED! 101 or an equivalent introductory electrical or low voltage course, or who have field experience.
Course content includes:
Fire Alarm Systems Design:
- Introduction to Fire Alarm Systems
- 10 Documents for Fire Alarm Systems
- NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code (this course uses the 2010 NFPA 72)
- Basic fire alarm wiring requirements from NFPA 70, National Electrical Code
- IBC/NFPA 101, Life Safety and Building Codes
- Sample Fire Alarm Design Projects
Fire Alarm Inspection and Testing:
- Introduction to Inspection and Testing
- Documentation requirements for fire alarm system inspection and testing
- Using NFPA 72 Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance forms
- Basic fire alarm circuit troubleshooting
- Using a volt-ohm meter and other test tools
- Code requirements and test methods for initiating devices
- NFPA 72 approved methods for inspecting and testing heats, smoke, and pull stations
- Code requirements and test methods for notification appliances
- NFPA 72 approved methods for inspecting and testing horn, strobes, and speakers
