Description:
Health and Safety Leadership
Recommended Prerequisite for Electrician Trainees: GET WIRED! 100, 200 & 300 Series
If you want to grow your career, developing safety leadership skills has the potential to make you more valuable to employers and contractors. Development of selected “competent person” skills, and expanded knowledge of NFPA 70E requirements are also a focus of this course that WECA offers in partnership with ClickSafety. The term "Competent Person" is used in many OSHA standards and documents. An OSHA "competent person" is defined as "one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them." This course provides you with competent person training in the area of
excavations and fall prevention. Employers have the ability to authorize selected employees to be “competent persons” in these areas related to health and safety when job performance indicates that employees are prepared to do so effectively by demonstrating knowledge of OSHA requirements for excavations and fall prevention. In addition, the
Health & Safety Leadership segment of this course consists of six modules, and is intended to cover health and safety leadership issues specific to construction environments. It is designed for construction company supervisors and managers or those who want to grow into supervisory positions and includes:
- Demonstrating leadership basic skills
- Motivating others through effective communication
- Creating a positive safety culture
- Conducting safety meetings
- Understanding liabilities related to supervisory responsibilities
- Identifying potential hazards
- Mitigating potential hazards
An additional unit of instruction on
Conducting Tailgate meetings expands on what you learned about conducting safety meetings in the previous lesson, and
OSHA Compliance Basics expands your knowledge related to management of safety compliance responsibilities of supervisors. Employer and employee rights and responsibilities under OSHA, how standards are created and enforced (with special attention to the construction industry), inspections, citations and appeals, as well as record keeping requirements are covered in detail. The
NFPA 70E for Supervisors and Managers unit in this course addresses electrical safety in the workplace under the NFPA 70E standard, emphasizing supervisory and management responsibilities for ensuring safe working practices around electrical hazards. Topics include a discussion of the importance of NFPA 70E and how the standard is organized, requirements for an electrical safety program, establishing and verifying an electrically safe work condition, energized electrical work, shock and arc flash risk assessments and approach boundaries. Requirements for equipment labeling, illumination, housekeeping, confined spaces, flammable materials, and personal protective equipment are also covered, all from a management perspective.
All in all, this course provides you with a foundation on which to expand your career potential by increasing your value in the workplace through development of basic safety leadership capabilities.
