Abigail Stone
Air Force veteran, current Air National Guard member, and WECA Commercial Electrical apprentice at our Fresno training facility
Meet Abigail Stone – Commercial Electrical Apprentice at WECA’s Fresno training facility, Air Force veteran, and current member of the Air National Guard.
Abigail – who served as a vehicular mechanic during her six years at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington State and reached the rank of Staff Sargeant – cites her former profession as the reason for choosing to become an electrician.
“I was a vehicular mechanic during my service, and that was a reason for choosing to be an electrician,” says Abigail. “I already knew electrical systems on vehicles, so I wasn’t going into the trade blind. It’s helped me on job sites with running equipment and being able to troubleshoot little issues so we can keep working.”
In her apprenticeship, Abigail says that her favorite thing to work on so far has been Musco Lighting, which are large area lighting systems used in applications such as sports.
“I’ve helped set them up from day one to finish,” says Abigail.
Abigail recommends that fellow veterans consider a career in the electrical industry after their service and offers the following advice to her fellow apprentices.
“Be a sponge. Absorb as much knowledge as you can from those around you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” says Abigail.

Austin Thomason
Army veteran and WECA Commercial Electrical Apprentice at our Sacramento/Rancho Cordova training facility
Austin Thomason, a U.S. Army Veteran now enrolled in the WECA Commercial Electrical Apprenticeship program, says that "seeing the joy on our customer's faces" after the crew has accomplished a job well done is one of his favorite aspects of his new career. He also says the competitive pay is great, he enjoys the set schedule, and his apprenticeship qualifies him for an extra paycheck each month provided by the post 9-11 G.I. bill.
