WECA Utah Valedictorian Joseph Discoe

Joseph Discoe WECA Utah Class of 2025 Valedictorian Spotlight

WECA congratulates Joseph Discoe, WECA Utah Class of 2025 and an employee of WECA Member Contractor Helix Electric, on his achievement in earning the designation of Valedictorian of his class.

Joseph attributes his success to many factors, such as curiosity and a strong work ethic; as well as support from several mentors and the opportunities provided by his contractor.

“The first (factor) was always asking a lot of questions. Do not be afraid to ask questions, because most of the time someone else will have that same question. You are not only helping yourself, but others around you as well. There are no stupid questions besides the one you don’t ask. Testing your knowledge is the best way to show your understanding. If you fail, that is one of the best ways to learn. If you make a mistake, learn from it and move forward. Be persistent and never stop trying. And make sure you are good with your time management; make sure you get everything in on time. This is not only important for work, but with your requirements for schooling as well,” said Joseph.

Joseph’s curiosity and strong work ethic isn’t limited to just his time with WECA – he also plans to apply it throughout his career.

“After graduation, I plan to keep moving forward with my career,” said Joseph. “I am turning into a lead, so I will have the ability to help a bunch of apprentices moving forward. This will help test my knowledge further and enhance my career as a leader. I hope to eventually move into running my own projects, and I plan to keep building my knowledge base and learning the business side of construction a little further.”

Last, but not least, Joseph’s strong support system – consisting of family, friends, and mentors – have been pivotal to his success.

“I would like to thank my family and friends who have helped support me along the way. I would also like to thank my mentors who helped me with any questions I might have, such as Tony Peterson, Derek Ferguson, Wade Wood, and Jacob Lawrence. I learned a lot from you and thank you for your time. I would also like to thank Nathan Goodrich for hiring me on at Helix. I appreciate all the opportunities you have given me,” said Joseph.

Congratulations on your graduation and valedictorian achievement, Joseph! Your story is a testament to dedication and solid planning for the future. WECA eagerly looks forward to all that you plan to accomplish in your future, including your thoughtful plans to mentor future electrician apprentices in Utah’s commercial electrical workforce!
